Frequently Asked Questions

1What are Kotap tarps made of?
Kotap tarps are made from polyethylene fabric. They’re durable, waterproof, lightweight, and cost effective. Since they aren’t breathable, they’re not suitable for most transportation uses. Tarps should always be securely fastened to prevent wind from lifting or damaging them. Exception: Mesh tarps offer breathability and can be used in transportation applications.
2Why is my tarp (finished size) smaller than the size listed?
Most tarp sizes are shown as cut size, which refers to the dimensions of the fabric before it goes through production. The seaming and hemming process reduces the final measurements, resulting in a smaller finished size. For precise coverage, select a cut size slightly larger than your needs and always refer to the finished size when purchasing. Exception: Some of our specialty tarps are offered in finished size measurements.
3How long will my tarp last?
Polyethylene tarps can last indefinitely indoors, where they’re shielded from environmental stress. Outdoors, all tarps degrade over time. Durability depends on exposure length, weather conditions, and material strength. Heavy-duty tarps perform better in extreme elements, while lightweight versions aren’t meant for long-term outdoor use. As a general guideline, the harsher the environment, the more heavy-duty your tarp should be.
4What qualities should one look for in a heavy-duty tarpaulin?
  • Fabric Weave (Tear Resistance): A tighter weave count delivers a denser, stronger fabric. Kotap heavy-duty tarps start at 12 × 12 per square inch, while all-purpose tarps are generally 8 × 8 or 8 × 7.
  • Fabric Thickness (Durability): Thicker tarps are more resistant to tears, punctures, and weather damage, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications like construction or long-term outdoor use. Tarp thickness is measured in mil, with 1 mil equaling 1/1000th of an inch. All purpose (blue) tarps are generally 5-mil, while Kotap heavy-duty tarps are 8-mil and thicker.
  • Fabric Weight (Longevity): Higher weight fabric offers greater durability, longevity and resistance to tearing and punctures. Fabric weight is measured in gsm or oz per square yard. Generally, the heavier polyethylene tarp last longer. Kotap offers heavy-duty tarps in 137, 180 and 270 gsm.
  • Color (UV Resistance): Light-colored and silver tarps reflect sunlight and withstand UV exposure better, extending outdoor lifespan.
  • Grommets: Closer-spaced grommets and reinforced corners ensure secure fastening and minimize tearing at attachment points.
5Do you offer custom sizes?
For one offs and small batches, we generally do not offer custom sizes.
6Are poly tarps waterproof or just water-resistant?
Polyethylene tarps are waterproof when new, but their effectiveness can decline as the material wears. To maintain reliable protection, inspect tarps regularly and replace any that show signs of deterioration. For proper water runoff, install tarps at a slope so rain naturally drains off instead of pooling
7What is the proper way to secure a tarp?
The method used to secure a tarp directly affects its lifespan and performance. Bungee cords, rope or straps rated for outdoor use work best when each attachment is tightened just enough to avoid stressing seams and grommets. To prevent wind from lifting or billowing the tarp, anchor edges low or behind barriers. Regularly inspect all connections and adjust tension as weather or load conditions change to keep the tarp securely in place.
